Best time to visit Zanzibar

The temperature barely changes. What matters is the rain, the wind, and how much you mind peak-season prices.

Zanzibar has no bad month for warm water. But it does have months when the sea turns glassy, months when the wind is perfect for kites, and months when the rain gives you an excuse to read a book on the veranda. Here is how to pick yours.

In short

  • Best all-round: late June to October. Dry, sunny and breezy.
  • Second window: mid-December to February. Hot, humid and mostly dry.
  • Cheapest: April and May, but expect heavy rain and some closures.
  • With a safari: July to October for Mara River crossings, January to March for calving.

The short answer

Zanzibar sits about six degrees south of the equator, so the temperature hardly moves through the year. Days are warm, the sea is warm enough to swim in every month, and what changes is the rain, the wind, and the price of a room.

For a first trip, late June to October is the safest choice: dry, sunny, a steady sea breeze, and the most comfortable heat of the year. Mid-December to February is the second dry window, hotter and more humid. March to May is the long rainy season, with the lowest prices and the most disruption.

Warm, clear water like this is on offer in every month. The weather around it is what changes.

MonthWhat to expect
January, FebruaryHot, humid and mostly dry. Warmest sea of the year. Calving season on the Serengeti plains if you add a safari.
MarchRains start to build. Still some sunny stretches, and prices begin to fall.
April, MayWettest months. Roads and boat trips can be disrupted, and Pemba gets the worst of it.
JuneRain eases and the dry season begins. A good month to catch lower prices before July.
July, AugustDriest and coolest, with consistent wind. The busiest and most expensive weeks outside Christmas.
September, OctoberDry and warming up. School-holiday crowds thin out, and it is one of the best-value months for guaranteed sun.
NovemberShort rains begin, usually in the form of afternoon or overnight showers.
DecemberShowers fade and conditions are usually dry by Christmas, when prices jump.

Pick the season by what you want to do

Guaranteed beach weather

Aim for late June to mid October. If you can choose, September and early October combine the driest weather with fewer people than July and August.

Lower prices

April and May have the deepest discounts, but heavier rain can wash out whole days, and a number of smaller hotels and restaurants close for the season. November is the gentler budget option, because the rains are shorter and lighter. Ask any hotel you book whether it stays open during your dates.

Paje on the east coast is the island's kitesurfing hub.
Mnemba Atoll is the classic snorkeling and diving trip.

Kitesurfing and wind sports

Paje on the east coast is the hub. There are two windy periods: roughly June to September, when the southeast trade wind is stronger, and roughly December to March, when it blows from the northeast. Check with a kite school for conditions on your exact dates.

Diving, snorkeling and marine life

Diving around Mnemba Atoll is good for much of the year, and heavy rain or rough seas can reduce visibility. Whale shark season off Mafia Island runs roughly October to February. Humpback whales pass through Tanzanian waters between roughly August and October, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Combining Zanzibar with a safari

Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti are the headline act from July to October.

The Great Migration moves in a loop around the Serengeti, so where the herds are depends on the month. Timing shifts from year to year, and wildlife viewing in the parks is good all year.

MonthsWhere the herds usually are
Jan to MarSouthern Serengeti and the Ndutu area: calving season, with lots of predators
Apr to MayMoving north-west through the central and western Serengeti, during the rains. Lodges are cheap and quiet.
Jun to JulWestern corridor and Grumeti area
Jul to OctNorthern Serengeti, with dramatic Mara River crossings (peak is usually August and September)
Nov to DecHeading back south as the short rains arrive
Zanzibar has no bad month for warm water. It only has months that suit you better.

Things that affect any season

  • Ramadan. Zanzibar is overwhelmingly Muslim. During Ramadan, which moves about eleven days earlier each year (in 2027 it falls roughly between early February and early March), some local restaurants close during the day and Stone Town is quieter. Tourist hotels and beach resorts run normally, and the evenings are a good time to be there.
  • Christmas to New Year. Prices jump, minimum stays apply, and the best rooms go months ahead.
  • East coast tides. At Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu, low tide pulls the sea out a long way in every season. Swimming happens around high tide, so check a tide table when you choose your dates and plan your beach days around it.
  • Hotel closures. If you travel in April or May, confirm directly that your hotel is open before you book flights.

Our pick for most peopleLate September to mid October, or the last two weeks of June. Both are dry and sunny, and neither is as crowded or expensive as July and August.

Quick answers

What is the best month for a first trip to Zanzibar?

September or early October. It is dry and warm, the sea is calm, and the July and August crowds have thinned. If you are adding a safari, the northern Serengeti is also in its river-crossing season.

Is Zanzibar worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes, if you are flexible and happy to trade guaranteed sun for lower prices and empty beaches. The short rains in November are mild. The long rains from March to May are heavier, with some hotels closed and boat trips cancelled.

Is Zanzibar hot all year?

It is warm all year. Daytime highs stay in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, and the sea is comfortable for swimming every month. June to August feels the freshest, and January to March the most humid.

Should I avoid Ramadan?

You don't need to. Resorts operate as usual, and Stone Town has a lovely atmosphere after sunset. Dress modestly in town, don't eat or drink in public in the daytime, and expect some local restaurants to be closed until evening.
